But many of these figures were fairly marginal, due in part to their reputations as having been sympathizers of the 1989 pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square.

　長い記事ですね！

　But many of these figures were fairly marginal...

「これらの人々の多くは」は、いいですね。marginal は small in importance です。fairly ＝ かなり、で、あまり強く訳さないほうがいい言葉です。

　これらの人々の多くは、あまり社会的な重みを持っていない

　ということだと思います。
